I have seen some really old leather fly wallets, but the flies inside were always wet flies. (I still have my father-in-laws leather wallet too.)

how far bak you wanna go?

i'm not sure what type of box gorgon used or halford but just trying to think logically, ...maybe that's where those rusty spring boxes came from before dries they had many of their flies snelled and in wet/leader boxes...some of those aluminum things were large enough for the stiffer dry hackles...aluminum boxes that were japanned black were widely used.

plastics came of age right around ww2 exactly when , i'd have to google it.

balsa would break, tried it....

as for the big skaters and vriants etc...i think they kept them in larger boxes almost like tackle boxes, with tray and drawers..spring clips and little cpmpartments for transportation purposes ...what they carried onto the stream before vests!...not sure maybe they stuck em into their hats.

cool
