Re: The Adams family

I used to tie mine with GPT with a few slightly shorter moose body hairs underneath to add stiffness. I've since abandoned this since it didn't seem to make any real difference (except to me).

Re: Hooks Question

I mainly use Mustad R30 (94833, same as R50/94840 except 1x-Fine) although I love Daiichi hooks and have been using them almost exclusively recently. To me they seem sharper and lately I've been bending Mustads on small trout (10-12 inchers). The bent hooks can't possibly be due to being "old" hooks...

Re: Just wanted to share with like-minded people

I'm sure you're right. Finally had enough of reading what little I could with the "look inside" feature on Amazon and decided to buck up and get it. I know it's going to be great.

Just wanted to share with like-minded people

I'm not a frequent poster here, by any means, but I do stop by and read almost daily. I'm only posting because other than my brother who lives two hours away, I have no one around who can share my excitement about any of this stuff. First, a Xuron vise to replace my HMH Spartan, a gorgeous Whiting H...

Re: Playing around with some capercaillie

Both nice--really like the quill version, but I'm very partial to quill- and biot-bodied flies.

Re: Tailwater caddis fly - CDC & Elk

Thanks, guys. I'll check out the Trout Hunter stuff--that is the Rene Harrop brand, right?

Re: Tailwater caddis fly - CDC & Elk

Where are you guys getting your cdc with such long fibers? I don't seem to have such luck finding the good stuff other than Petitjean's, but I can't bring myself to pay $13 for such a small amount. Maybe you're using goose or turkey preen feathers instead of duck?

Re: QW Hatch at my tying bench

Wow--what a beautiful piece of work! I recently built a portable fly-tying box, which I intended to alter or redo all along, but now mine looks as if it were cobbled together by a five year old.

Also, the first photo of the "cascading" flies is really nice. Good ties, too.

Re: Calftail wings

I mainly use calf body hair, but I've used the flats and t-base feathers, too. I prefer the calf body to the tails, especially when I can get some body hair with a bit of wave to it. Both kinds of turkey feathers just look too abrupt to me. I do like the curlier tails in blaze/fluorescent orange for...
