Chris, Flies bought from the Dette Shop are a far better entity than the flies of Orvis, LLbean, Bass Pro, etc....

a local fly shop is the place to shop for well tied flies...

where are you located

Like theft weight as well. you can also "dub" it onto very fine tippets like 7-8x. very effective in heavily fished waters

varnishing feathers is possible but major pain in the butt. IF they are not tie-in correctly the fly will twist the tippet. Same goes for fan wings. But if you wish try using one of the new uv finishes like solar flex formula. Or you may also use thinned down pliobond. BTW if you tie Jack'spatterns ...

Besides the look another layer of tinsel adds weight to the fly. Walt Dette used to use three layers and didn't worry about gaps between the turns because he said the three layers will cover almost all the gaps and add some weight. Like Gary said, it is a personal choice. I am not 100% certain, but ...

what's wrong with a bigger fly on a smaller hook? I understand what you are saying but these proportions are very similar to the way Eric Leiser tied.
