I prefer the needle nail knot over the nail knot. it seems to go through the guides easier. I tend to use very long leaders , much longer than the rod and any knot like a nail knot becomes annoying as it passes through the guides so I've been splicing the butt end of a leader onto the end of the fly...

Mikes Book tell it all but you can't go wrong with just about any make hook in the "standard" dry fly hook. those four necks mentioned will tie more patterns than you want. the stripped quills will also make nice bodies. dubbing ...a small container of 6 different colors will suffice...cream, olive,...

Another possibility...I've had 2/0 hooks straighten while fishing for stripers. 2/0 is a big hook and if the point has not penetrated the soft tissue of the mouth and is just touching the harder bone much less pressure is needed to straighten the hook. yeah I know trout have soft mouths etc...just s...
