Years ago Mary was tying flies at Ramsey Outdoors when she asked if there was a particular fly anyone wanted to see...So wiseass me said a variant. She looked at me knowing the answer when she said "yes...if you can find the hackles".. well i gave her a number of necks and she picked out 6 i repeat...

Nik, If you do decide to dye, take them off the cape and strip them first. Otherwise, if you dye the whole cape when you remove the hackle barbs from the quill, much of the color will come off with the barbs (I found this out the hard way :D ) I stick with natural now. hey nik... if you tying red quill bodies some chinese necks are good for them as are the indian necks. and don't be afraid to dyed a really poor cape that just isn't good for anything else but quill bodies and nymphs... of course if you are looking for deep natural red for hackles then ignore what ...

Last month I got an order on Catskill style dries, and he obviously likes Variant flies as he wanted a Red Quill tied Variant. Not a standard pattern of what I know, and nothing I had tried before...
