In my experience I have found that it is better to let the fish stay on the bottom on the river where there is less current. So putting the rod tip in the air would bring the fish up in the water column creating more resistance on the fish and the hook/tippet combination. By keeping the rod tip down...

I carry mine in the first trip to a pond and if I find a boat in there it doesn't go back in but most ponds under 2 miles I still carry it in. You know once you get comfortable fishing out of something it is hard to switch back. Pete and Simon are nice guys to deal with. They both are avid fly guys....

I am glad this came up because I use the above #1 method and the Leisers Book of fly pattern calls for the #2 method and I was unsure if I was doing something wrong or it is just a style thing.

Thanks Mike. I never use a stacker on the calf tail and that is what I use. They do look scruffy so I wanted to see if I was doing something wrong.
