Old style Gordon

Inspired by the beautiful Golden Brown Spinner posted by Niklas Dahlin I decided to have a go at the pattern myself. In Mike Valla's book "The Founding Flies" there's a picture of an original Gordon tied by the man himself. As I happened to have some old style English mayfly hooks that seems to be a...

Re: Quill-Winged Light Cahill

Thanks all, I'm glad you found it agreeable :) Those quill-wings are fun to tie providing you have access to good quality feathers. Not very practical, but pretty..

Quill-Winged Light Cahill

Light Cahill tied with double-slip quill mallard wings. Not because its practical or anything, but just because I like the look :-) /David S.

I tie/keep a couple of these myself for the few times I fish the Battenkill every few years... it's about history and paying homage to those before us...

Thanks Ed, nothing beats fishing a piece of history, especially one you've tied yourself :) //David S.

Re: Oatman's "Shushan Postmaster"

Beautiful tie! Interesting enough, back in the 1970's this was a favorite summer/fall steelhead pattern on the Klamath and Trinity Rivers in northern California. I suspect it had a lot to do with the predominance of both species of golden stoneflies, especially the Trinity. A notable variation with...

Oatman's "Shushan Postmaster"

I've been doing some reading in Mike Valla's new book and thought I'd stock up on some streamers for next summer :-) I don't fish streamers that much, probably that's why I don't catch those monster trout ;) With all those nice classic streamer-patterns in that book perhaps it's time to give them a ...

Thanks Ed, I can't say I fish them a lot myself but they sure look pretty. I think I'll have to give them a go next summer :)

Real nice fly Matt, those quill bodies are quite tricky to get right in my experience and yours look very good indeed...

Blue Quill Fan Wing

In Mike Valla's latest magnum opus (great book by the way) something caught my eye. In the section on Rube Cross there's a picture of a very beautiful Blue Quill Fan Wing , the fly is tied by Cross but I'm not sure if Cross is the originator of the pattern. I'm guessing the basis for the fly outdate...
