Tommy Balash

Did anyone on the Boards know Tommy Balash? I recently acquired some nymphs he tied--mostly stones, with quill and quill-manque bodies tied with what seems to be raffia, or maybe even plastic raffia--and am interested in learning more about him. I've read a couple of online obituaries, but am hoping...

Great White Shark Seal FDly

Anyone have a dressing for a Great White Shark Seal Fly? My son found this when researching sharks for a school project--really nice take by the shark. The photo shows a "lure' being used, but as we are fly fishermen, we need to do it differently. Dana, by any chance do you have a size 6,246/0 Ringe...

Re: Mother's Pool, Esopus Creek moments - February 26th

I love these pictures, Ed--thanks for sharing them. Especially the picture of Decker & Ole Bess. It's a picture of so many contradictions--a Payne rod with an automatic reel; a huge fish and a dinky creel. It's a reminder that when fishing things can go anywhichway, and they often do.

Re: looking for a specific hook

here's a shot of the hook in question...as you can see , it looks tinned, maybe 3-4x long , de, upturned shank, with a shower point and slightly out turned point This helps a lot--1920s or so--. No nickel hooks then I don't think? So the Allcocks are all wrong. I checked my Rhead stash, there are l...

Re: looking for a specific hook

Here's a better image of the nickelled hooks: Allcock's S217 on the left (2,4,6,8) and Mustad 3908C on the right (2,4,6,8):

Ted, will any of these do? I can't find anything larger than the size 2s with a TDE.

Re: looking for a specific hook

I can’t believe I don’t have a down eye, tinned hook!(yet) We will take care of that little problem next month. Keep in mind tinned hooks and nickel hooks are very different. The tinned hooks feel like they've been galvanized. The nickel hooks are highly polished. Both Allcocks and Mustad made a nu...

Re: looking for a specific hook

Joseph!!!!! You are an ALLCOCKS closet hoarder..... I knew it !!!!!!!   Who?--you mean me? What closet? Nah. Just got lucky one day when I found a mess of nickle-plated hooks for sale--both Allcocks and Mustads--which are needed for a lot of west-coast steelhead patterns that I was ...

Re: looking for a specific hook

Ted--

Steelhead hooks? Will any of these do? I think the size 2s are the biggest I have but I can look around.

Re: Eric Leiser

Very sad indeed--. I love Eric's Dette book--it's unpretentious, straightforward, and especially revealing--and turns otherwise ephemeral oral history into something very lasting. When I first read Ed's post I went straight for my archive, as I have a single Leiser wet fly--but could only find the p...
