Fly Tails and Plum Tails

So--this post is about....tails. Sort of. Only not about 'tails' in any conventional sense. It has to do with discipline-specific idiomatic usage of the word "tails" as applied to two--um--'things'. 1) Fly tails. These were sold by Ray Bergman. Red label box. They're not in the Bergman catalogue I h...

BrownBear

I somehow missed it, but the inimitable BrownBear, Hank Pennington, passed away in August. There's a thread about his passing on the Bamboo Forum: http://classicflyrodforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=63&t=123573 He had some great contributions here on SGM--whenever he started to say "dollars to dough...

Re: Hackle Porn - Darbee

Every time Dana put up pics of his capes I get Darbee Dun Envy--go look it up, it's in the latest DSM. I agree that Evan and Charlie have nice birds--also Scott Krosch, out in Iowa. Evan dyes some of his pelts, so you need to check carefully when buying off Etsy--but the hackle itself is really good...

Re: Vise recommendations

Your friend can’t go wrong with a Thompson........ if he falls down the black hole, he can always upgrade and keep the Thompson as a back up, just like the rest of us did. LOL!--I must be the only one who never had a Thompson--my first vise was a Universal rotary--. There are a lot of pictures of p...

Re: Labor Day

The photo links had died, so I put new ones in--so we can see once again Ritz, Gingrich, and Alden Knight doing their thing.

Happy Labor Day, everyone--

Re: Nail knot or...

Ted, That's a beautiful splice--handmade all the way, but very nice and efficient-looking. Next time, please also post a picture of that Ancient Pine tree--we all have trees in our past--mine was a white pine, that took 1 1/2 inches off the tip top of an FE Thomas Browntone alongside the Ausable. :(...

Re: Ora Smith

I don't know how this old Ora Smith thread came to light again--but it needs some pictures. The last two Lang's auctions had some Smith flies from his estate--'control' copies they seemed to be. Smith developed the famous Maynard's Marvel--among other great brook trout streamers. https://i.postimg.c...

Re: Nail knot or...

After five decades of fly fishing I am partial to Wright & McGill Leader Links--the little plastic orange torpedo links--knot the fly line at one end with an overhand knot, and the leader butt at the other end with two overhand knots, and you are good to go. I've caught landlocks up to 5 pounds usin...
