Re: Picket Pin

Ed after reading Joes reply last night I headed to the tying room to try my hand at tying a few Picket Pin. Once the gray squirrel wing needed to be cut to size I realized you had stayed true to what many Picket Pin had and have for a wing. Even though I have little broken or pocket water to fish ne...

Re: Picket Pin

Ed I had always seen the Picket Pin tied on a long streamer style hook. A little searching earlier revealed that it was perhaps intended to be a wet fly early on. Then too I have always seen it winged with squirrel tail. Just wondering what you are winging yours with?

Re: Catskill brook trout waters...

Ed there's a lot to love there even if the trout aren't cooperating all of the time.

Re: Bergman style

Bob in my humble opinion most all of the things you are questioning relate to personal preference. Some preferences will be because of the way the finished fly looks while with others it may have more to do with how the fly fishes. Ed, CJ, Bob R, and other's, surely you have some opinions on this qu...

Re: Our friend

As painful as that must be to recall thanks for sharing it with us Ed. It's going to be a while before many of us are able to put a line on open water. Hopefully there will be a few more recollections shared by yourself and others in the next two or three months.

Re: Tying wet fly wings with duck quills

I haven't used goose quill as yet. Just wondering with being a bigger feather do the slips from them lend themselves better for the bigger flies?

Re: Tying wet fly wings with duck quills

John I'm certainly no expert on the subject but would agree, there is a select spot in each feather that will yield the best looking results. Fortunately as you mentioned I doubt the fish will care. Of course we like that wing to look nice but after a couple trout they'll all look like well used fli...

Re: Autumn BWO's

Ed until just a couple weeks ago the Greenwell's Glory in size #18 tied wet style was a go to fly for me. Baetis pretty well dominate mayfly hatches on the stream I fish. The #18's hit a happy medium in size as I said until just a few weeks ago. Now we are seeing much smaller flies and the hatches a...

Re: Fall patterns for trout

Thanks for the reply Tim. I really enjoy tying these little soft hackles. For whatever the reason or reasons I do not do as well as I think I should in the catching department. Perhaps I'm simply not taking into account being hatch specific enough. They sure all look to be deceivers to me though. Re...
