So what are you tying now?

My tying season begins when the Christmas Trees go up (there are three of them this year, this is what it's like living in the city--yearning for the woods). And the rivers too--. I usually start with Haystacks as a way of getting in the groove--getting a feel for proportions, thread tension, and so...

I’m just wondering why the good old “Red Ball Brand” isn’t around anymore -
And lasted 10 to 15 years without a problem...
The problem is that they lasted too long without a problem--how can you make money on something like that? So they got better at....planned obsolescence.

Re: Urine stained fox vixen

Something like this? https://i.postimg.cc/656fNWsc/IMG_2176.e.jpg My suggestion is eBay. It might be a little early now, but once the trapping season gets into full swing, look for a seller who has a dozen or more red foxes for sale--and ask if they have one with a pink underside. I found mine this ...

Re: looking for high quality photo of Preston innings

Gary, can you explain a little more about the situation at AMFF? I've heard form several people the challenges they've had gaining access to the collection for research purposes--people with legitimate research interests--who have been rebuffed, or asked to pay fees to do research--soemthing I know ...

Re: Carrie Stevens, the hard way (long winded)

Thanks, Gary. I'm very happy with how these are coming along. Probably less a labor of love than a labor of madness, lol.

Time to go fishing!--will get back to them later in the summer.

Re: Carrie Stevens, the hard way (long winded)

Thanks, Dana! Dana's care package included some Mustad 3907B hooks in #4, and a huge pile a beautiful hackle from the 1940s--duns of different shades and badgers and grizzly--all perfect for tying Stevens-style streamers. (And a very special set of flies tied by The Master, which requires a separate...

Re: Carrie Stevens, the hard way (long winded)

I've starting dyeing hackle for the Carrie Stevens project. Part of the trick to dyeing hackle is to create a slightly variegated effect. Colors in nature are rarely 'pure' or 'solid': they're usually a bit 'dirty,' flecked with ambient color and shading, which you don't notice until you look closel...

Re: Flyfishinginmaine.com

Yeah--FFIM crapped out. Using Firefox you can't pull up anything. Using Chrome you can access the archive. But that's it. A year or so ago they planned to migrate to a new platform and trash the old one--but a bunch of people said there's too much good stuff in the archive to just throw it all out, ...

Re: Carrie Stevens, the hard way (long winded)

Here was my little dissertation on floss: https://theriverscourse.blogspot.com/2011/08/floss-flavors.html LOL, thanks, Gary!--there's good stuff here, I wish I saw this before I started my own floss studies! I'll have to try your up-and-and-down the shank routine, it seems so obvious the way you de...

Re: Carrie Stevens, the hard way (long winded)

Tinsel hooksets are done; time to turn to the floss hooksets now. One of the biggest challenges with fly tying flosses is finding the right density/thickness, and the right color. For Carrie Stevens streamers, orange, red and black are used most frequently. Orange is the trickiest; it can range from...
