The Dacks and the dark side

Post by Eperous »

We just returned home from several days up in the Adirondacks. We hiked, canoed, socialized with great friends, and I even fished a bit. Though, in fishing I returned to the dark side.

The first evening I wandered the Raquette River with my good buddy. No flies, no fly rod; just my old ultra-light Loomis graphite rod and a small Shimano matching reel. I picked up over a half-dozen smallies upwards of a foot-long, or so, flipping spinners as the sun set. Sadly I lost my last Abu Reflex orange spinner, when a snag in the dark peat-stained river ate it. That lure was over 50 years old, probably older than many of the SGM board members here.

We saw mink, eagles, and other wildlife. We ate like kings and drank beer like fools. I even tossed a black marabou streamer in Raquette Lake, annoying and hooking bass there. :)

But by far, the highlight of the trip was getting up at 5 AM one morning to wait on sunrise. I snapped digital images with my SLR and drank coffee as life all around me came alive for another Adirondack day.

Back to chasing Catskill mountain brook trout and tailwater browns this week; good to be home again.
