The most useless fly tying material/item ever

Post by Eperous » Sat Dec 29, 2012 2:18 pm

Helping my wife make the house ready for family descending upon us Sunday, including our daughter’s three boys, five to nine years old. I think those guys feed on steroids :o , all boys--- always going, got to love ‘em. :D

So to be on the safe side, I cleaned up my tying bench and put everything away. ;) In the processed, I stumbled upon three brand-new, unopened, solid as rocks, plastic containers of Zap-A-Gap. Fortunately last year I switched over to liquid Locite super glue; works great, never goes bad.

But here’s the question, what’s the most useless fly tying material/item ever? My vote goes to Zap-A-Gap.

For materials, plastic JC eyes

For tools, that Gallows thing. I never understood how something like that hanging over you fly would be a plus and not a minus. CJ

Almost any of the tools 'created' by Marc Petti(whatever?). Kind of reminds me of use 1x and put in the closet for the rest of eternity. Oh, I should say that I've never used any of those tools.

That's funny Ed, my experience with Zap-A-Gap is exactly the opposite. I have an opened bottle of the stuff on my desk that I've used for well over a year and it's still like new, unlike most other "super glues" I've tried before. Perhaps there's different formulas of the stuff, mine is marked "Medium CA+"..

Perhaps I'm an oddball, but I actually own and like most of the products from Marc Petitjean.. The Petitjean-bobbin is a wonderful tool that I use on a daily basis ;)

For most unnecessary fly tying product I think my vote must go tho the Norvise.. "Tie Better Flies Faster" they say.. Sure, this may well be true if you tie mostly Woolly Buggers, for most other flies a I find a conventional vise far superior.. (and I actually own a Nor Vise with all the conversion kits  )

You use worms?
Okay, maybe most of the 'plastics' but what about the fine (meaning texture) type stuff like antron, sparkle yarn, poly yarn? Any of those?
Just askin.

You beat me to it. That's the first thing I thought of when I saw the subject of the thread, without even reading any of the posts.

Good question! Nymphforms-those little die cut, plastic nymph underbodies. Swannundaze. Plastic JC as already mentioned.

This crap is almost as hateful, and useless (in my opinion) as "no-knot" eyelets!
