Well, thanks guys. I just had the dumb luck of being in the right place at the right time.

Not only did I get the tying kit, I also got with it another Common Sense fly box with some of Proper's flies in it--some snipe and purples, and a bunch of different black gnats (both clumped and knotted)--and several sea trout flies attached to leaders:

I still need to photograph the rest of the hooks (mostly all Partridge) and the really nice little hand-held brass vise that looks like a little golf pencil. I'll get it done. But the car just died, and looks like it might be beyond resurrection--so I need to go get another family car first.

I know you have a busy work schedule, but a post detailing the contents of Datus Propers Common Sense Fly wallet would be outstanding...
........long, overseas flights are good for crafting this type of detailed post...

You guys are sick. Told Dana sometime ago I had quite a few flies. Ha, I don't have squat. I just sent some hooks to a fellow in Montana that's measuring and photographing hooks. Sick, sick, sick. :D

And who, pray tell, is this fellow "hook porner"?
Yet another iron monger, lost in the sea of sizes, on the never ending quest to find the true and correct size #12,standards of which do not exist!
My twin brother Theroe is truly crazed over such things...

'Iron Monger'. I like that. I really enjoy watching the obsessions of others take hold of their lives and wind them up like the proverbial dubbing noodle. I've never had the hook bug, though I really enjoy the learning experience I get from reading all of this. I had an 'Iron Monger' obsession of my own for awhile but I've since remedied it. I had a line of 9 Ford F-150's dating from the first editions (1948) through 1952, all in a neat row out behind the barn. The intent had always been to restore just one of them. There were back there for 20+ years and somehow I never quite got around to it... but my intentions were good, you know?

Then one day a small plane flew over. A few minutes later he flew back, even lower. The next day a car came down the driveway and a guy gets out, says he was the one flying over and offers to buy every truck. So I sold them all.

I've never been bothered by the restoration bug since.

...I have an old potato barrel up in the tying cave, it has so many rod tubes poking out of it that my wife says it looks like a big porcupine. I guess I just traded one collection for another.

I was poking around in a box of papers looking for some old photos a friend sent, and chanced upon a Ray Bergman catalogue I forgot I had. It's from 1942, when I suppose hook supplies were a bit tight. I;m posting a few images of the hooks, hopefully this information might be useful to CJ and other Bergman collectors:

So here I am; a moth to the flame....... last night I pulled out all of my Bergman‘s for another part of this hook project I’ve been working on. One thing I noticed is the prices hand written on the individual boxes and in the catalog that Joseph has posted above. We complain now about the price of premium hooks, but if you really think about it back in 1942, to pay $2.60 for a box of hooks was a lot of money. What was the typical salary back then? Here is some data from the Interweb ....
In 1942:
Average Cost of new house $3,770.00.
Average wages per year $1,880.00, $35/ week, $6.50 per day.
Cost of a gallon of Gas 15 cents.
Average Cost for house rent $35.00 per month.
So at the 1942 salary, a single days pay would get you 300 hooks.

By comparison, in 2018 the average salary is $51,000 per annum, roughly $200 per day. All other things being equal, in today’s market with the average salary you could buy about 800 hooks!
It seems to me that Ray Bergman hooks were very expensive “back in the day”

Great catalog bearbutt!!!!

I hope there's going to be something published when you guys get done fooling around. C'mon, get your priorities straight; quit your day jobs and get serious about this! This is a great thread, gentlemen. I've currently got both Proper's 'What the Trout Said' and Bergman's 'Trout' sitting open on the table next to the bed. I never get tired of gleaning new insights from both.

My god, Dana--all those hooks and such an accommodating wife--make sure one of the boxes coming in has shoes or something for her too--.

The 3984H hooks sound great for Haystacks--I like a fairly stout hook to bring the fly into the film--up to now have been using primarily 94838s--and the 57552 sounds interesting--I don't think I've seen them before? Maybe post some closeup photos beside a 94840 for reference?

I'll get the Proper flies inventoried later in the spring--I'm a bit behind now in everything--blew out the retina of one eye, so I've been in the hospital a lot more than I'd prefer lately.

The 3984H is a heavy wire hook. Tell me what sizes you like and I will send you some, along with the deer hair I mentioned to you.......it is super fine material, best I’ve ever seen. Your hands will work magic with it!
