How many UNUSUAL ways do you tie the Usual???

Post by Laminarman »

I just tie it as intended- I'm boring I guess- with the natural snowshoe hare color and whatever body. After that other excellent thread on the Haystack I tied up a bunch in all colors and sizes- really sloppy and buggy looking. I'm wondering if folks get creative with the Usual too? I only own natural snowshoe fur. For now. I haven't seen that it mattered but then again like I said, I only have that one color.

Bill Phillips showed me the Usual some 40+ years ago around this time of the year. I still tie it the same way, snowshoe rabbit and florescent orange thread, and it is still my go to fly. I tie it in twelves to twenty fours.

Years ago Art Lee wrote a great article---"The Usual With a Twist"--- on Usual variations... he basically used this pattern to match most Catskill mayfly hatches... my favorite two are BWO & Sulfurs, these are the only variations that I tie/fish, and I think they are effective at times...

Thank you very much. I might try the Usual with a different tail as in the thread you posted. Seems I've always done better with those with a big, forward canted ugly and mushy snowshoe wing rather than sparsely tied. Don't know if it captures air bubbles or what.

I tie some unusual usuals, and use snowshoe for wings on lots of things. I like Weilenmann's Regular:

And tie variations on this:

Hard to beat the original with hot orange thread, though.

Here's an unusual based on "Betts Generic Bug" from Stewart & Allen, Flies for Trout, 1993.
