Chadwicks 477

Some call them Bottom Dredgers. They are too often over shadowed by the dry fly, but have their place here.

Chadwicks 477

Post by catskilljohn »

A card of the infamous Chadwicks yarn just went for 81.01 on flea-bay, man if they only knew then what they were selling for now

Another case of the "I have to have it" syndrome ;)

So the question begs...is this required for a Sawyer killer bug? My answer, YES! CJ

Shoot, I didn't see it. I have a small piece and would love to have a whole card. Why you ask, cause.

Yeah Chadwick's 477 futures back in the early 60's would have been a great deal, eh? I have a near-full card of the stuff. I think I paid $35 bucks for it about 5 years ago. The guy I got it from had a second card about half-gone but I told him I'd pass.

Is it required for any old Sawyer's Killer Bug (ie one for fishing)? No...(heresy I guess) Is it required for an authentic Sawyer's Killer Bug? Oh, most definitely!!

I was offered a two pound spool of 477 at a show a few weeks ago.
No thanks, I don't rate it, different strokes for different folks.
477 is spot on for matching shrimps on the floor of a couple of miles of Hampshire's Upper Avon, the Armed Services' Water, where Sawyer worked. End of.
On my home freestone stream the shrimp are light olive, my local chalk stream here in England has shrimp which are cloudy blue/grey, not the tan/purple of the Avon which is not a chalk stream.
I did get a sample of the 477 though and it compares exactly to the carded stuff I already have under every light I can find. The stuff I have already is from the 60's when I bought a few cards, waste of money.
This new batch 477 is easily available from a UK outlet, Glasgow Angling Centre, I think.

477 is more snake oil

Snake oil, most likely but it is one of those things that one would love to have. I went to Glasgow just the other day but I didn't see any. I guess I'll have to go look again. I have fished the KB tied with different colors and the Veniards sub seems to work the best.

Royce

I remember when you did that it was definately a head turner. I believe I have the article on fishing in the pink about 477 and others, it's a pdf. It really was a great article and your testing thread was excellent also.
