May fishing
May fishing
So far, this has been one tough NYS trout season--- at least for me... streams have been HIGH and cold... recently lots of bugs about, but I think the high flows have kept the trout well fed, and they don't seem to be moving much--- at least for me... I've been getting a few trout, recently more so on dry flies, but it's been tough--- at least for me...
I've noticed quite a few Quill Gordons this year, probably more than I've seen in decades, but nary a single single trout coming up to a QG... and lately quite a few BWO's about, that local wild boys seem to feed upon, but not always... even noticed some caddis for the first time yesterday.... with some sporadic risers...
It's raining here now, in the eastern Catskills, and I think spring's high flows have made this a challenging year--- at least for me... I hope these flows carry through a few of the summer months....

Hi Ed, Gee it must be cold there because I see you are wearing cut off gloves. Great looking fish Boy I like that Brown in the top photo. Just make sure you do not take a dip in the cold water. Just kidding, Bill
Re: May fishing
I've had good luck fishing Quill Gordon dries on smaller, wild trout streams this year.
Haven't fished anything that carries more than 100CFS under "good conditions" yet.
You are correct - the major streams are running high, and have been for all of April and May, so far.
Was a pretty prolific BWO hatch on the Chenango/Susquehanna rivers right here in downtown Binghamton last week,
while I was out for a walk at lunchtime...

Same on the Esopus last week, and not while I was out for lunch... also was my best 2019 trout-fishing day this season, but a fair amount of work for me else... even today when I managed to seduce a few wild bows late, that ate my emerger pattern...

Re: May fishing
Hello Ed, Ed, Aren’t you fishing? I really enjoy your posts on SGM. I am going up this coming Tuesday thru Friday morning. I’ll be mostly fishing the Beaverkill and the East Branch. You or anyone will know me by my wading staff made from a rake handle and crooked in the middle. Good fishing everyone, Bill the mailman Vance
Re: May fishing
Closed out the month with a solid Neversink brown. Yesterday evening was the best outing of the year for me in terms of hookups and size of fish, but although there were tons of bugs in the air, the fish were feeding subsurface. This morning, to kick off June, I only managed a 10" brown (but it was on a dry).

Yes Bill... we were down in VA last week... my wife visited her sister while I hiked and fished SNP... I had some pretty good brook trout fishing, in fact, the best that I've enjoyed in SNP in decades....
Hope you're enjoying the Catskills, I hope to do so myself Monday now that I'm back home...
