ADK Brook Trout Streams: Mount Marcy hike?

Post by corlay » Mon Jun 24, 2019 5:30 pm

Hi All.

I'm planning to hike Mt. Marcy with my son next weekend (weather dependent).
Should I bring a light pack rod to paint a mountain brook?
Any good fishing along the way?
(Phelps Brook, Marcy Brook look like promising candidates...)

PM with any advice.
Keep the fishing secrets off the internet.

Thanks!

Corlay... not sure how many of those streams contain brook trout due to acid rain... I have caught brookies in parts of the upper reaches of the Hudson, which was very memorable for me... I'm scheduled to trek into Lake Tear in the Clouds myself sometime in July....

Good luck...

There are fish in all those streams (and also the Johns Brook route to Marcy from the Garden trailhead)--but the Garden is closed presently, and the Keene Valley shuttle is a royal pain, which limits your access mostly to the Loj. You will have a LONG hike in from the Loj trailhead, and back--. So I'd say leave the rod in the car and enjoy the hike alone--. If you want to fish, stay an extra day and fish the West Branch of the Ausable, the green drakes are out now....

We did the hike from the Loj to the Marcy summit.
Was an awesome day...

I did pack my 7'0" 5pc #4 fiberglass rod and reel and a few flies - but I didn't use them.
The waters were at pretty nice levels, too.

But there just didn't seem to be time.
Round trip took us almost 10hrs. (with about 2hrs at the top).
