Hackle Porn - Darbee

Post by Theroe » Wed Sep 25, 2019 1:43 pm

I personally will not buy any of the "new" hackle pelts - most current offerings on the feather market are akin to a Swanson TV dinner. :o

Sideling Hill - Collins being the ONLY two choices (at least for what I do). Plus, Evan and Charlie are good guys :)

I use Darbee hackle for most all of the flies I tie. Colors are superb, barbules are super thin(less than half the diameter of anything available in stores now) stems are supple and wind perfectly. And almost every pelt is translucent, and flecked.
So here we go: Hackle Porn, round one!

Translucent, red dun. Truly one of a kind!

A friend from another forum, Ray, held this cape up to the sun and proclaimed: "it glows like a ruby". And it does....

Beautiful.

Looks like you have a corner on the market.

Darn, now I have to go back to my Whiting pro-grade capes... like going from champagne back to Bud Lite. 8-)

Hi Dana,
The last time I saw a Darbee Pink pelt was in Walt’s shop (S+m Flytying) In the early 80’s.!
I tried to purchase the cape but Walt said “Not for sale”
Lou 😀

Ahhh- So you have heard of the pink pelt! Very rare and hard to come by; exceptional for tying. I’m happy to know that someone else has actually seen one !! The Darbee pink is one of those things that has pretty much been lost to history – much like the condor/silk trick. When I discussed that with Eric Leiser, his eyes lit up with amazement .
Maybe we should have a thread about lost tricks and techniques ........ I will tell you this: a size 16 bivisible tied with pink Darbee hackle will take rising fish just about every time. And that’s not an exaggeration.
