last night I reread A BOOK OF TROUT FLIES by Preston Jennings and it jogged my memory. I remember my uncle fishing big variants with gold and silver tinsel bodies. I understand the pattern was modified by Atherton and Flick.
My question is this, does anyone still fish the Baigent- Jennings pattern?

BLUE VARIANT
Re: BLUE VARIANT
Yes - most everytime I go !!
"Variant" paints with a broad brush: as the name implies, it is more of a nomenclature than a name. In my book, "variant" is a class of flies. Soft hackle and the Flick type are two of my main go to patterns, in sizes #20 to #8, from dark dun for a quill gordon to light cream for the whitefly hatch.
Great topic - maybe it will stir things up here........

“Time to go fishing”
Re: BLUE VARIANT
Yes Dana - That’s a good way of putting it, a class of flies.
I too have an inordinate fondness for soft hackles and Flick style dry flies but I must also add cdc emergers to my fly wallets and boxes...
