Looking for a bamboo mentor near area code 12912

Post by SamsonCane »

Hello all, I realize this is a long shot but I am looking for a bamboo rod maker within about 100 miles from my area to teach me how to build bamboo rods. I’m 15 and pretty good with my hands, but getting into building is pretty bewildering because I don’t know much about what tools are necessary and which are a luxury. Plus, I can’t afford to buy many of those tools unless I sell all my bamboo rods :lol Don’t think that’s happening.... I taught myself how to fly fish with some help in how to read water from my friend Tom Conway at the Two-Fly Shop. However, I think building rods is something I need to learn from an expert. I would be open to an apprenticeship deal this summer, “unpaid” labor in return for experience. I am not averse to hard work as I work on my mom’s small farm. "Unpaid" is in quotes because the experience is obviously worth a lot but I cannot afford the several thousand dollars required to swing a rod builders' class, so I would have to work for it, I can do any manual labor, tie flies, household work, et cetera; especially cooking.

This was first posted on the Classic Fly Rod Forum by me.

Thanks for any input.

I think your best bet would be to find a sympathetic amateur builder to help you out. There are several professionals that teach but to make a living they have to teach for a fee, usually commensurate with the cost of the rod they build. A lot of guys have learned from books, and there is a lot of information available on the Classic Flyrod Forum.

Good luck!

What town do you live in? I will ask my rod maker friend if he knows anyone in that area. He knows a lot of other makers.

From the posted ZIP Code , you are in the lake placid area...... Why not make it a point to come down to the Catskill Flyfishing Center & Museum! There’s a complete Rod shop on the premises, and a bunch of excellent guys of all skill levels.
If it were me, I would make the drive....

I did find someone. Also, someone gave me the opportunity to purchase a Bellinger planing form, binder, depth indicator, and several other tools for 500 plus shipping. He used them to make 1 rod. I'm going to buy them.
