I have done the same thing with tiny flies: thread and a cdc down wing. Sometimes I will add about three hackle fibers for a tail or 3 or 4 antron fibers for a shuck. Tied thread body CDC sulfurs for the West Branch for years too when the naturals are particularly thin bodied. Simple flies catch fish.
