mayfly club at riverside

Post by ted patlen » Sat May 15, 2010 10:03 am

the date is june 12...at the riverside about 10-11 am till 3 pm.

for those who don't know about this "club" a few years back a group of us met at ken tutalo's camper at the roscoe campsite because steve thornton was in from england, to have a hot dog dinner then fish a few hours. just that nothing else....two weeks later we all got an e-mail to go to the 'mayfly club" WEBSITE.

the originals were, thornton, ralphie, meade, brandt, bill logan, tutalo myself i think that's it, to long ago to remember everyone

that is the extent of it, but we've been getting together the past few years and somehow, someway this has expanded into and unoffical event....great time to get together to tie, lie, eat then fish...big bug time (don't know about this year with everything early) but a good time to be on the water anyway.

midday, late lunch, fish late...how good is that.

I think its a good excuse to get red eyes ....

If this the same event that Mark Thompson organized a few years ago I tied with Tom Mason and had a great time.

Ted, I would like to participate and I have a few new tiers that would love to as well. One of my buddies is a streamer specialist.

Bambu(Nik?).....Mark Thompson had nothin' to do with organizing the Mayfly Club. He came on board to help me with the Clearwater Junction, a TGF event i originally organized, AFTER i had given it birth and ran it for two years ('05 & '06), by myself. He then did a very god job of helping out with the show ('07), and took it over from me '('08), when my wife and i moved to Arkansas. Unfortunately he kind of droped off the scene after that and TGF has not done a very good job of keeping it going. they changed the name and the time of year but still did imho, very little to seriously promote it and or advertize it. And from what i have been able to gather, it was a flop last year. A good show HAS to be well promoted if it is to succed in raising money.....given that is the purpose. Perhaps they will finally learn their lesson and get it together. "Time Will Tell."

Teddy, you almost got it right. The original get-together was the year Steve Thornton flew over to do a photo shoot and stayed at the trailer in the campground which I think was part of the deal.
Since we all tied with Steve at the shows we knew he was coming and made a date to meet him. At that time Ken was one of the partners in the Red Rose. Steve tied by himself at the Red Rose that first year. He promoted himself a little, but only a few people showed up. Ralph, me, Dave Brandt, Bill Logan, and your good self met him, some there, and the others at the trailer. Ralph and I watched from the trailer platform as you and the others all fished. There was a little cookout and we fished some more. While we were just hanging around I said, "We ought to do this every year." and then (since it was May) "We could call it 'The Mayfly Club." It was half said as a joke and half as one of those things you would like to see happen, but rarely does. Every one agreed it would be cool, but I don't think anyone really believed it would happen. It wasn't long after Steve went back to England that I began to get emails and a couple of phone calls from Steve saying "Lets do it. And lets have a half day tying clinic." Steve figured we could advertise it and people would show up, maybe buy some of his material and flies. Later Steve made up a poster which I made up a bunch of and sent around. Judie made a few too and put them in shops. I came down a couple days early and drove up and down the rivers placing them under wipers on every windshield I found. I collected a fly and a signed card from each tyer and we sold $5 raffle tickets for the group of flies, always giving the money to the owner of the establishment that lets us use it's facility for our clinic. Judie DVS, Stan F, David M have all donated extra items as additional prizes. I'll have to find the old posters to see if we met there twice as The Mayfly Club before it closed and we moved to Danny's Riverside Cafe, seven miles downstream. Steve made Ken a sponsoring member, invited Kim Boal, and I asked Rich Bogardus and Tim Wohland. Others joined us each year. I mentioned that we should have a patch and or a pin. Tim Wohland's sister hand made the 20 original patches and gave them to us for members. After they were gone Tim had them made at a commercial place as they were too time consuming to do more by hand. After the originals were gone a new member would have to buy one from Tim at $20 (they cost him $17.80 each to have made somewhere in Albany). The following year we invited a bunch of tyers to join us including Paul Whillock from England who did fly over. David and Becky Martin in Nevada, and Jackson Leong joined the Club and sent flies for the fly raffle although they were unable to make it.This year Jim Froio had pins made that match the mainly yellow and black patch (although many colors within the patch Mayfly itself) that will be available at $10 each. This year Bruce Marino and Shawn Britton will join us. Shawn is donating a couple signed prints of his art work and I believe Bruce is bringing something too.The first ticket drawn will be for the flies.
At the moment I am still waiting to hear from Catskill John, Bob Boyle, Ed Van Put, and three others before I can invite additional tyers as we are limited to space. Foxy Joe usually ties with us but Ralph called tonight and said Joe had to work that day. I'm sure we will all stop in to see him. Keith Fulsher can't tie but said he hoped to drop in.
Warmest of regards, Bob Mead

i bow to a greater mind ...well, at least one that remembers shit better than i do....that discussion had to have happened when most of us were fishing...anyway, i'll be there...my brother won't but i'll coerce him into making the posters...

by the way, i love the nicknames BUT you're name seems to be missing.....so i will hold a contest ...the winner gets a fly tied by you....

BOB MEADE needs a nickname...anyone who uses "MANTIS" will be ridiculed endlessly for a millenium or so.

lets be brilliant here...who can suggest a grand minoker for BOBBY..?

(i abstain )
